Žaidime Kohle & Kolonie, kurio veiksmas vyksta XIX a. ir XX amžiaus pradžioje, industrializacijos amžiuje žaidėjai valdo mažas anglies kasyklas Vokietijos Rūro srityje (Esene, Hattingen, Bochum, Witten). Jie turi modernizuoti šias kasyklas, kad sujungus šias mažesnes kasyklas į didesnes, jie būtų pasirengę perimti aukciono, taigi ir didesnės kasyklos, kontrolę. Be to, žaidėjai turi užtikrinti, kad jų kasyklose būtų darbuotojų, taip pat statydami ir prižiūrėdami geležinkelių sistemą, apimančią kasyklų infrastruktūrą. Galiausiai, jei žaidėjai neinvestuoja pinigų ar darbuotojų į savo kasyklas, kad jas apsaugotų, jie padidina savo galimybę patirti avariją kasykloje, o tai sukels neigiamų pasekmių, kai ateis laikas teikti pasiūlymus dėl konsoliduotų kasyklų. Laimi tas, kuris geriausiai atlieka šias užduotis.
